Wallingford Hawks! What we have to offer!!!

Wallingford Hawks Program Overview

The Hawks are the oldest youth hockey  program in America and one of the most successful travel programs in the state. We are an American Development Model (ADM) compliant program with the objective of long-term development. Our mission is to provide an opportunity for young people to learn the rules and skills of ice hockey through supervised instruction and competition while emphasizing the ideals of good sportsmanship and teamwork.

Program Offerings:

         Development Programs

Learn to Skate  – This program is for our beginner hockey players ages 3 and up. Session 1 is a 4 week session (one weekend instructional hour per week) from mid October until the weekend prior to Thanksgiving.  Session 2 runs from beginning of January through mid Early February  and consists of two weekend instructional hours (Sat and  Sun.) per week. Registration for Learn to Skate  opens in late summer.

Mite Development – This program is for our players (ages 4-12) that have already participated in a Learn to Skate or Learn to Play hockey program.  The Mite Development program runs mid October to mid March and consists of two weekend instructional hours (Sat. and Sun.) per week. Registration for Mite Development opens in late summer.

House League – This program is for kids aged 5-12 who have at least 1-2 seasons of skating AND hockey experience. Players are placed onto teams and have two practices and 1 game per week.  Games are played half ice, with real boards across the center ice line separating the two games. Games are played 4 verse 4 plus a goalie in net (using goalie equipment). The House League program runs from mid October to mid March. Registration for House League opens in late summer.

         Travel Programs

U8 Mite Travel (2012 & Younger Birth Years) – The Hawks are compliant with USA Hockey ADM model at the U8 level. The mite travel teams consist of our more experienced players at the U8 level. Mite travel teams will compete in CHC. Tryouts are held in March for the following season. Mite Travel teams will have two practices per week plus 2 games per weekend. Most weekends consist of one home and one away game. The number of mite travel teams will be dependent on several criteria including; number of participants, birth years, and talent level. The Mite Travel program runs from late August to mid March.

U10 Squirt Travel (10 & 11 Birth Years) – We have offerings for all experience levels at the U10 level. We typically have several teams at the A, B and C levels. Hawks return from Lake Placid Well Decorated

Squirt A wins Gold

Six Wallingford Hawks teams competed in the January CanAm Hockey Tournament at Lake Placid, and they returned home with some additional luggage. Four teams made the gold medal round in their respective divisions, with the Squirt A team bringing home the gold, and PeeWee A, Bantam A1, and Bantam A bringing home the silver. Additionally, the Hawks represented themselves extermely well with Squirt A and Bantam A both winning the Fair Play award for fewest penalties amongst their competition, and multiple Hawks demonstrated tremendous skill with wins and runner-up placements in the speed skating, shooting, and goaltending competitions. Congratulations on a tremendous showing, and for representing the Hawks program through sportsmanship and teamwork. Go Hawks!

Hawks Helpers - Skating for a Cure

This past December, Hawks Helpers from mites to bantams came together during the holiday break to compete and raise money for Smilow Cancer Center. Forming teams to compete in a 3 vs. 3 pond hockey style skate-a-thon, numerous Hawks and participants from area teams (Such as GNH, Yale, and the CT Chiefs) competed over two days of games and 20 hours of skating to earn sponsorships and raise funds for cancer research and treatments.

Thank you to all skaters, parents, volunteers and supporters for making this event a success. With your support the Hawks Helpers came together to raise close to $6,000.

Way to go Hawks!

Wallingford Hawks Travel Permission Form

During travel, players may be away from their families and support networks, and the setting – unfamiliar locker rooms, automobiles, and hotel rooms – is less structured and less familiar. A travel policy provides guidelines so that care is taken to minimize one-on-one interactions between minors and adults while traveling. Further, the policy directs how minor players will be supervised between and during travel to and from practice and games. Adherence to travel policies helps to reduce the opportunities for misconduct.

USA Hockey requires that all local programs have travel policies applicable to their youth teams and to provide the policies to all players, parents, coaches and other adults that are travelling with the team.
